Industrial AI breakthrough: IFS and Anthropic unveil Resolve for asset-heavy sectors

At the IFS Industrial X Unleashed event in New York, IFS Nexus Black and AI research company Anthropic unveiled Resolve, a pioneering industrial AI solution rooted in Anthropic’s Claude models. This collaboration represents a significant move towards embedding advanced, industry-specific artificial intelligence directly into frontline operations across asset-intensive sectors including aerospace and defence, construction and engineering, manufacturing, energy, utilities, natural resources, and telecommunications.

Both companies bring complementary strengths to this alliance, IFS’s extensive experience with asset-heavy industries and Anthropic’s commitment to developing safe, reliable AI technologies. The partnership aims to address pressing challenges these sectors face today: ageing infrastructure, the retirement of skilled personnel, and volatile supply chains, all against the backdrop of rising demand driven by trends like re-industrialisation and the expansion of AI data centre facilities.

According to Garvan Doyle, Applied AI Lead at Anthropic, delivering AI solutions for physical-world applications is inherently more complex than for digital domains such as office work or financial modelling. He explained, “Most of the progress in AI so far has happened in the digital domain, where it’s easy to simulate tasks like coding or financial modelling. But when you move into the physical world, things get much harder.” Resolve is designed to overcome these hurdles by ingesting and interpreting multisensory data, including video, audio, sensor readings, and complex schematics, to provide real-time, actionable guidance to technicians on the ground.

Practical applications of Resolve include predictive maintenance to pre-empt and prevent machinery faults, optimising technician scheduling and parts logistics, transcribing voice notes, and automating compliance documentation. The solution’s end-to-end integration moves beyond flashy AI features to assure tangible business outcomes, as Doyle emphasises: “The magic comes from the end-to-end system. It’s not about cramming every AI buzzword into a solution , it’s about driving real business outcomes.”

Early deployments underscore these benefits. At William Grant & Sons, producers of Glen Grant whisky and Hendrick’s gin, Resolve has already shifted 38% of repairs from emergency fixes to planned maintenance by analysing sound, visuals, and sensor data. The projected operational savings from this shift at a single site are £8.4 million annually once the solution is fully rolled out. Similarly, gas and utility companies have leveraged Resolve to accelerate power restoration following major outages by up to 40%, aided by predictive analytics for crew positioning and visual diagnostics to speed on-site repairs.

This initiative represents a broader industry recognition that generic, white-collar-focused AI tools fall short when applied to asset-centric industrial environments. IFS highlights the urgent need for bespoke, scalable AI systems to underpin multi-decade investments in physical assets such as plants, grids, and vehicle fleets. This move complements broader moves by tech giants like Google, which is investing $9 billion in AI cloud infrastructure on the U.S. East Coast, signalling a robust race to underpin AI’s future with physical infrastructure.

Other AI-driven transformations are underway more broadly across sectors; for instance, Singapore’s DBS bank plans to phase out up to 4,000 roles through AI adoption, even as it creates new positions tied to AI technology. Meanwhile, Anthropic is also partnering with organisations such as the American Federation of Teachers to train educators in AI, demonstrating the growing recognition that AI’s impact will be systemic and cross-sectoral.
